Synopsis: Understanding the future of cities requires a sound understanding of their past. The longer the perspective we take to study cities the better. In this talk, Dr Lopez Galviz will focus on three cities at three different times in their history, namely, London circa 1851, Paris circa 1965 and Shanghai circa 2005 to explore questions such as: (a) how the future of the three cities was envisioned, understood and shaped in three different periods; (b) who has taken part in the process, through which mechanisms and with what consequences; (c) what role have technology and science played in urbanization and urban change; and (d) how is the future of cities today (in 2017) different from their future as it was seen 160 years ago.
