Causes and Causalities: An Aristotelian framework
Causes and causality are core in our explanatory attempts. While we use those concepts almost every day we rarely reflect on their meaning.
In fact, the way we conceptualize those concepts is tacitly rooted in the Newtonian paradigm which considers causes solely as efficient causes and implies a certain type of causality. Aristotle suggested a contrario that there are 4 types of irreducible causes and different causalities. This framework presents another world view and thought structure which enables us to enrich our analysis of social phenomena.
This presentation seeks to highlight the importance of taking time to think about the way we think and wishes to inspire to look for different perspectives.

Data-Driven Entrepreneurship
Through his career as an entrepreneur, Dr. Ed Powell has been part of founding 11 different ventures (so far) solving a wide variety of different problems across sectors. From healthcare to pest control to air travel and many things in-between, each of these start-ups have used model-based artificial intelligence to help organizations make better business decisions. His "main" job is his role as CEO of IPX, a software company that manages large Intellectual Property portfolios and provides innovation-related advisory and monetization services to universities and corporations. IPX also partners with inventors and entrepreneurs to help them build companies and leverage this proven "data-driven entrepreneurship" approach to bring their own inventions to market.
Prior to his move to the commercial sector, Dr. Powell was a Member of the Technical Staff at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he focused on large scale data fusion and the application of Artificial Intelligence to the command and control of surveillance satellites. The algorithms he developed for modeling satellite trajectories are still the core of many of these companies' economic optimization technologies. Dr. Powell received his PhD and MS in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a BS in Aerospace Engineering from Auburn University.
Anyone interested in Entrepreneurship, the real world applications of Data and Decisions, or how engineering and business can intersect is highly encouraged to attend Dr. Powell's talk.

Observation skills is one of the basic skill required in the innovation process. This practical workshop highlights the need for observation and listening skills. We are all being taught how to read, write and even how to behave socially; yet, education systems do not teach us how to see. We look but we don’t see and that is a difference.
Observation skills can be enhanced with focused viewing of original works of art, describing, and then interpreting findings. In this session, we focus on viewing original works of art, describing, and then interpreting findings.
In this session, “A Renaissance of Renaissance Thinking,” we advocate for the connection between artistic talent and business entrepreneurship, two areas that fuel each other and provide an opportunity for mutual learning. By revealing trends and upcoming changes in the world, we highlight the importance of being creative and having artistic skills. Using examples of leaders in the business world that have already capitalized on art and creativity, we raise questions such as: is it the balance between the right brain and the left brain that made this person or company successful? How can we accomplish this balance? Why should we do it? These questions help to initiate a change in paradigm.
This presentation will discuss the current state of transportation in Nairobi, the challenges with implementing state-of-the-art smarter transportation solutions, and opportunities for collecting new data sources that can inform transportation planning efforts.
Like many other African cities, Nairobi is now grappling with the challenges of rapid urbanization. Kenya’s population has increased by 55% over the last decade, and this combined with significant rural-to-urban migration in Kenya has resulted in critical stress on Nairobi’s limited transportation infrastructure. To mitigate these transportation issues, Nairobi County Government has proposed a number of transportation solutions, including bus rapid transit and arterial expansions. The challenge here is the lack of adequate transportation data for investigating potential travel responses to such investments. There is currently no on-going data collection system nor periodic planning effort to investigate the travel behaviors of Nairobi residents. This significantly constrains the ability Nairobi transportation planners to investigate (via scenario analysis and forecasting) transportation solutions that will best address Nairobi’s multimodal transportation needs.
